Oral Pharmacotherapy for Male Sexual Dysfunction

Oral Pharmacotherapy for Male Sexual Dysfunction
By:"Gregory A. Broderick"
Published on 2007-11-06 by Springer Science & Business Media

For the generation that reached sexual maturity in the 1960s, the “pill” became synonymous with sexual freedom and started a sexual revolution. For women it meant freedom from the fear of pregnancy, and for men enhanced sexual opportunity. The new era of the pill has nothing to do with fertility, but everything to do with sex. The first orally effective prescr- tion drug for treating erectile dysfunction (ED) was marketed in 1998. ® Sildenafil (Viagra ) has rejuvenated the aging male veterans of the sexual revolution, forever changed the science of sexual medicine, and tra- formed society’s perspective on aging and sex. This class of drugs, known as oral phosphodiesterase inhibitors (PDE-type 5), is highly effective in the treatment of ED. Since its introduction there has been a much greater awa- ness of ED, its comorbidities, and its effects on the quality of life. In 1997, while preparing to address the Endocrine Society on the occasion of the 92nd American Urological Association meeting, I first looked at the p- clinical studies of sildenafil. I thought “this will change everything” and it clearly has—changing practice patterns in sexual medicine, and the at- tudes of patients, potential patients, and their partners. Two new PDE-type ® ® 5 inhibitors, tadalafil (Cialis ) and vardenafil (Levitra ), were first approved by the European Committee for Proprietary Medicinal Products and subsequently by the Food and Drug Administration in 2003 and 2004.

Pharmacognosy and Molecular Pharmacognosy In Practice

Pharmacognosy and Molecular Pharmacognosy In Practice
By:"Soodabeh Saeidnia","Ahmad Reza Gohari"
Published on 2012-02 by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing

In 21th century, pharmacognosy research areas are expanded and new aspects of phytochemistry, analytical chemistry, ethnobiology, ethnomedicine, molecular biology, and phytomedicine are developed. The present book prepares a practical guidance for young scientists, researchers, pharmacognosy and phytochemistry students with little experience of pharmacognostical investigations. It is considered that the comprehensive practical methods, as the laboratory manual, were included for each natural product class together with the colored photos of the reactions, which have not been found in the previous related books. Previous practical pharmacognosy books contained mainly the microscopic analysis and concise phytochemical methods. For this reason, the authors tried to include more details about the phytochemical methods, biological and biochemical assays and molecular biological techniques related to natural products and medicinal plants. Thereafter publishing this book, the authors intend to develop the chapters adding more experimental methods, which may be useful in new aspects of pharmacognosy.

The Pathophysiology and Pharmacotherapy of Myocardial Infarction deals with the advances in the pathophysiology and pharmacotherapy of acute myocardial infarction and related complications. This book covers two major consequences—cardiac muscle dysfunction and cardiac electrical dysfunction. This text begins by reviewing the controversy surrounding the pathogenetic mechanisms of atheroma formation and its potential reversibility, including the status of coronary risk factors and benefits of primary prevention. The pathophysiologic mechanisms of pump failure and the current approach to its management are then deliberated, followed by a discussion on the rational use of vasodilators in post-infarction heart failure and pharmacotherapy of cardiogenic shock. The rationale for the interest in the role of coronary vasospasm and thrombolytic therapy for acute myocardial infarction is also covered. This publication concludes by reviewing the approaches for the management of post-infarction ventricular tachyarrhythmias and concept of secondary prevention of sudden cardiac death. This compilation is valuable to medical students, primary care physicians, and cardiovascular specialists.

Pharmacotherapy in Aortic Disease

Pharmacotherapy in Aortic Disease
By:"Arturo Evangelista","Christoph A. Nienaber"
Published on 2014-11-18 by Springer

This book is driven by the considerable progress made by novel imaging techniques in understanding the pathophysiology and evolution of aortic disease and its diagnosis. Despite the lack of symptoms in stable conditions, most aortic diseases have a high morbidity and mortality. New therapeutic strategies such as endovascular treatment and surgical techniques have appeared to improve conventional surgery in advanced phases of the disease, but until recently, medical treatment has focused on the control of cardiovascular risk factors using beta-blockers to reduce aortic wall stress by reducing blood pressure and heart rate. Pharmacotherapy in Aortic Disease updates the reader on the new medical treatment that are changing the natural history of these diseases. Leading experts have created a critical in-depth, yet concise, analysis of the available medical treatments for different aortic disease entities. Both basic research studies and clinical trials discussed in this book serve as a base for improving therapeutic management, delaying the need for surgery, and prolonging survival in these patients.
